I created the First Night Norfolk Grand Prize winning Button & Poster Design in 1996, but because of a year end shortfall, Festevents had to reschedule the event for 1998, so I had to change the 7 to an 8, now there was 3 moons instead of the 1 of the 9. The button design would have been better on a rectangular shape instead of round, to reflect the dimensions of a light plate, and could have been worn like a VIP pass on a lanyard. Mayor Fraim was happy to receive a signed copy of the poster. The prize was a stay at a hotel in downtown Norfolk to watch the fireworks for New Year's. Cool.
Drawing at fast-food restaurants was a cure to not having a real studio. Especially good, if you were living on the street, an attic, or a vehicle. It was climate controlled, and had tables. You could rent "studio" space for the price of a cup of coffee.
